Metal
crafts |
 Metals
have been used as raw materials since the olden
days not only because of their durability but because
they tend to be more valuable. More technology is
used in making metal crafts. Thai metalware and
crafts fall into various groups as follows: Ironware
and Stainless Steel, Bronzeware, Brassware, Gold
and Silverware, Pewter, and Aluminum.
|
 Some
of the metal crafts we visit are stainless steel
products in Ayuthaya province the former capital
of Thailand. Bronze and Brassware products are also
produced in Ayuthaya as well as in Samutprakarn,
provinces on the outskirt of Bangkok. Most popular
of all metal crafts is the silver jewellery found
in Surin province in Northeastern Thailand and,
in North of Thailand, in the craft work done by
Karen and Mien hilltribe communities.

the oldest tradition being in North Eastern Thailand.

These are products that have been produced with
the technique of surface application. This requires
a basic material 'lac' resin for the surface. A
few decorative materials like red pigment, colours,
mother of pearl, gold or silver foil leaves are
used to bring out the patterns which are skilfully
inlaid on to the base material.
|
 |
 Usually
hard wood or bamboo is used as the base. There are
various kind of lacquerware such as Pearl-inlaid,
Gold Application, Glass Decoration, Colour Application,
and Eggshell-inlaid.
Laqcuerware craft producers are found mostly in
Chiang Mai and Lampoon province in the North of
Thailand.

Both hardwoods and softwoods are used in making
handicrafts in Thailand. Originally, wood was used
as material in making utensils for everyday living
and for houses and vehicles such as boat and carts.
The skills and carving patterns have evolved and
now wood craft is used in these different ways;
decorative carvings, traditional houses, furniture,
toys and games, musical instruments. Although there
are woodcrafts in all parts of Thailand, many groups
are found in the North of Thailand where Teak wood
used to be abundant.
