A Fair Trade Tour makes a difference !

What is a Fair Trade Tour?

Promotion and awareness in the concept of Fair Trade is growing worldwide.

Fair Traders:
  • Provide opportunities for producers in developing countries to access markets.
  • Enable producers to receive a fair price for their commodities and products.
  • Ensure appropriate working conditions, avoid exploitation of women and children, empower communities through democratic management, encourage bussiness transparency and promote a concern for the environment.
  • Work to reduce inequalities and disadvantaged trading agreements between developing and developed countries.
As in other industries, Fair Trade must be promoted in tourism.

All too often, benefits are not given back fairly within the destination countries and to the communities who own the very resources that make tourism successful. Instead, local people can suffer a deterioration in their livelihood and wellbeing as a result of negative environmental, social and cultural effects from tourism activity.
(see Tourism Concern for more details on this issue)

Phu Phiang aims to practise "Fair Trade" by working towards a fairer and sustainable tourism in Thailand.

Our main "Goals of Fair Trade" are to:

  • Create close partnerships with local communities, local guides and local entrepreneurs and businesses.

  • Ensure there is a mutual benefit for all involved in our activities and that fair prices, wages and compensation are always given as appropriate.

  • Make a point of giving travellers an understanding and appreciation for local cultures that will provide a positive impact on host communities.

  • Take care that our activities involve only a sustainable use of natural resources, keeping damage to the environment and ecosystem to a minimum.

  • Adhere to work standards set by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) including those relating to child labour, health and safety, and human rights.
